BCCI Makes Major Changes To IPL Governing Council

The BCCI has made major changes to the structure and functioning of the IPL governing council, halving its strength, slashing the term of its members and limiting their powers. The decisions were announced after the board’s annual general meeting on Wednesday, at which it also decided to investigate alleged irregularities committed by three franchises. The one decision taken by default was the removal in toto of Lalit Modi, the man most closely identified with the IPL, from its operations. He is no longer part of the BCCI or the IPL, which he raised from its official status of a subcommittee [...]

Highveld Lions Beat Mumbai Indians

Highveld Lions 186 for 5 (Vandiar 71, McKenzie 56*, Malinga 3-33) beat Mumbai Indians 177 for 6 (Tendulkar 69, Burger 2-33) by nine runs. Sachin Tendulkar the batsman nearly made up for Sachin Tendulkar the captain, but a charged-up Lions side completed a feel-good underdog win in a tense finish to kick off the Champions League T20. Their young opener, Jonathan Vandiar, and the experienced Neil McKenzie gave the star-studded but sloppy Mumbai Indians a rough welcome to the Highveld before Lions’ enthusiastic bowlers and fielders did enough to keep the chase in check. Tendulkar’s 69 off 42, which was [...]

ICC Suspend Trio Under Anti-Corruption Code

The International Cricket Council has suspended Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, the three players implicated in the Lord’s spot-fixing scandal, under the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Code. The move came on the same day Pakistan announced that the players had opted to voluntarily withdraw from the forthcoming limited overs series with England. An ICC press release said that the three players had been charged with “various offences under Article 2 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code for Players and Player Support Personnel relating to alleged irregular behavior during, and in relation to, the fourth Test between England and Pakistan [...]

Virtual Semifinal: India v New Zealand Last ODI

The word most conspicuously absent in all press conferences this Micromax Cup is ‘momentum’. The schizophrenic performances of all three teams in Dambulla — crushing opponents one day, and being crushed themselves the next — has meant no team could claim whatever advantage momentum allegedly provides. The topsy-turvy league phase reaches its conclusion on Wednesday when India and New Zealand face off in an elimination match. Watch this exclusive match live online at Cric24 Media and watch Bollywood Movies and Desi TV Channels as bonus. New Zealand’s inexperienced batting line-up remains their biggest concern. The relaxed format of the tournament [...]

India seal bonus-point win

India 171 for 4 (Sehwag 99*) beat Sri Lanka 170 (Dilshan 45, Ojha 3-36) by six wickets India’s bowlers and Virender Sehwag led the recovery from a dispiriting defeat against New Zealand, helping their team overpower Sri Lanka and secure a bonus point to leave each of the three sides with a win at the end of the first round of matches on Micromax Tri-Series. MS Dhoni’s luckless run at the toss continued, but Kumar Sangakkara’s decision to bat gave India first use of favourable conditions on a breezy, overcast Dambulla day and their bowlers cashed in. Sehwag then followed [...]

Ponting calls 5-0 Ashes win ‘absolutely possible’

Australian Captain Ricky Ponting believes it is “absolutely possible” that Australia can trounce England with a 5-0 Ashes clean-sweep this summer. Although Ponting didn’t quite match Glenn McGrath’s 5-0 prediction from four years ago – which turned out to be correct – he was confident that Australia had learnt from their mistakes and such an outcome was “all in our hands”. The Australians gave up the urn in England last year with a 2-1 defeat and while they have performed strongly since then, a 1-1 draw against Pakistan last month raised a few questions. The Headingley loss was Australia’s first [...]

Shahid Afridi To Retire From Tests

Shahid Afridi made the decision that seemed inevitable from the day he took over as Test captain, by announcing his Test retirement immediately after leading his side to a 150-run loss against Australia at Lord’s. Afridi has been a reluctant Test player over the years and this Test was his first in four years. A poor personal performance, capped by a four-ball 2 on the last day – out slogging to deep midwicket – didn’t help matters and the second Test against Australia at Headingley, starting on Wednesday, will now be his last. Afridi’s participation at Headingley, however, will depend [...]

Yuvraj Recalled For Sri Lanka Tests

Yuvraj Singh, who was dropped for the recently concluded Asia Cup, has been recalled to India’s squad for the three-Test series in Sri Lanka starting July 18. Suresh Raina, who has been part of Test squads before as injury cover, made it as a first-choice player for the first time. As expected, the selectors went back to Ishant Sharma and Sreesanth to partner Zaheer Khan in the pace department, and three spinners were selected, which meant both Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha were in. A 16-man member squad was chosen to include a reserve wicketkeeper, Wriddhiman Saha. Earlier this month, [...]
