Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza is set to make his return from injury after being named in a preliminary squad for next month’s home tri-series featuring Sri Lanka and India. Mortaza, who picked up the injury in the West Indies, missed the home ODIs against Zimbabwe in October and November after failing to recover in time from a knee surgery. Shakib Al Hasan led the team in his absence. Opening batsman Tamim Iqbal was also included, following fears that he may be ruled out due a fractured hand. He had injured his left hand while batting against Zimbabwe in an ODI [...]
India bowled, batted and fielded better than Sri Lanka, but that’s just part of the story Review System India may still have gone on to win the series 2-0, but who knows? Kumar Sangakkara believes the absence of the Umpire Decision Review System system cost his side “over 500 runs and a lot of wickets”, but that’s not the point either. The point is, in two other series going on simultaneously, the review system is – reluctantly or willingly, successfully or otherwise – being used. It is but natural for Sri Lanka to feel frustrated. Cricket is moving into an [...]

Indian Premier League 2010 The IPL’s decision to rule out Pakistan’s players from the third season of the Twenty20 league was a result of time constraints arising from visa complications, Lalit Modi, the league’s commissioner, has said. Pakistan’s players will miss the IPL for the second season running, despite getting clearances from their sports, foreign affairs and interior ministries, an NOC from the PCB and letters of invitation from IPL franchises. However, the players failed to get their visas in time to meet the IPL’s deadline of December 7, two days before the trading window closes. Modi said the deadline [...]

India will be without the services of opening batsman Gautam Gambhir, who will be attending his sister’s wedding, for the third Test against Sri Lanka in Mumbai. Gambhir has been in prime form in this series with centuries in each of the two Tests. Gambhir’s spot is likely to be taken by M Vijay, the Tamil Nadu opener. Vijay made his debut against Australia in Nagpur last year, when Gambhir was banned for a Test for an altercation with Shane Watson. The rest of the squad, which was initially picked for the first two Tests, has been retained with no [...]

Muttiah Muralitharan, the Sri Lankan spinner, has said he may quit international cricket before the 2011 World Cup in the subcontinent. Murali, on his fourth tour to India, his final overseas tour, is struggling to come to terms with the placid Indian pitches and a strong batting line-up which has treated him harshly in the series so far. In the second Test, in Kanpur, he went for over 100 runs for the second time in two Tests in the series, and so far his five wickets have cost him 396 runs, at an average of 79.20. “I am 37 years [...]

The first time Virender Sehwag met Sachin Tendulkar was in March 2001, at a practice session ahead of the first ODI of the home series against Australia. For Sehwag, Tendulkar was the man who had inspired him to skip exams in school and allowed him to dream of cricket as a career. Sehwag was shy then, and didn’t speak to his hero. He got 58 off 51 balls and picked up three wickets. Tendulkar later walked up to him and said, “You’ve got talent. Continue playing the same way and I’m sure you will make your name.” That ability to [...]
David Shepherd, one of cricket’s most genial and best-loved umpires, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 68 and leaves a long-time partner, Jenny, who he married last year. Shepherd stood in 92 Tests between 1983 and 2005 and 172 ODIs, including three consecutive World Cup finals, advancing England’s reputation, with Dickie Bird, for producing the finest umpires in the world. He was a romantic, sentimental man, especially when it came to cricket, and resented what he saw as examples of greed creeping into the modern game. “I’m very sad and shocked it’s happened,” said Bird. “He [...]

New South Wales 159 for 9 (Lee 48, Rampaul 3-20) beat Trinidad & Tobago 118 (Clark 3-21, Lee 2-10) by 41 runs A STUNNING performance by Brett Lee, first with the bat and later with the ball, has ensured New South Wales’ crowning as the world’s best domestic cricket team last night in Hyderabad, India.
