Resurgent England Bounce India Out

‘You’re not Singh-ing anymore,’ chanted some English fans, and India certainly weren’t as they were dumped out of the competition that they won two years ago, with one Super-Eight game still to be played. With Lord’s bathed in brilliant sunshine, a capacity crowd watched as England held their nerve for a three-run victory which ensured that new champions would be crowned on June 21. Around half of them would have gone home happy. Kevin Pietersen shared a 71-run partnership with Ravi Bopara, before Ryan Sidebottom and Graeme Swann picked up two wickets apiece to derail India’s chase. MS Dhoni and [...]

Sangakkara and Dilshan Dump Australia Out

Sri Lanka dumped Australia out of the ICC World Twenty20 with a six-wicket victory at Trent Bridge. Kumar Sangakkara played a captain’s innings to lead them across the line, with an over to spare, as they chased 160 after Tillakaratne Dilshan sparked the pursuit with an innovative 53 off 32 balls. Australia were set back by a magnificent display from Ajantha Mendis who bamboozled with his variations and although the match went to the final over Sri Lanka always held the edge. Australia‘s stay in this tournament – the international title they don’t hold – lasted four days and now [...]

Ireland Storm Into Super Eights

Ireland beat Bangladesh in the 2007 World Cup and, pitted against the same side in a must-win clash in more familiar conditions, produced an encore to surge into the second stage of the World Twenty20. This will go down as one of the biggest moments in Ireland’s cricket history – but another disappointment for Bangladesh, who were knocked out of the competition. The hungrier side was always going to come up tops and Ireland took a massive stride by keeping a reckless Bangladesh to 137. Bangladesh batted with the freedom of a team that believed they were already in the [...]

Australia Send Symonds Home

Andrew Symonds is believed to be contemplating retirement after being ordered home from the ICC World Twenty20 for an “alcohol-related incident” that has thrown Australia’s tournament plans into disarray. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland announced Symonds’ contract was under review, but Cricinfo understands the allrounder may jump before he is pushed. The developments come after the Australian team’s leadership group – consisting of Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Tim Nielsen and Steve Bernard – recommended to Cricket Australia’s board that Symonds be withdrawn from the World Twenty20 for drinking while watching the State of Origin rugby league match on Wednesday [...]

‘Fatigue is a part of Indian cricket’ – Dhoni

MS Dhoni, the captain of the Indian team which is defending the World Twenty20 title, has admitted that his players were tired after the IPL, but also said the hectic schedule was something his team was used to. “When you play so many matches you do get tired, after all it’s a human body. There was no time to rest for the players. But fatigue is a part of Indian cricket. Till now Indian players have done well with it.” Sachin Tendulkar, Gary Kirsten and Dilip Vengsarkar, the former chairman of selectors, have all spoken out against the packed schedule, [...]

Bangladesh Cancel Foreign Tours

The Bangladesh government has halted all visits by foreign teams because it can’t guarantee them sufficient security, meaning that the forthcoming visit of Pakistan, which had been delayed in the wake of the Lahore attack on the Sri Lanka team, has now been postponed indefinitely. Pakistan were originally scheduled to play two Twenty20 matches and five one-day internationals from March 10-22. However, Bangladesh’s own security situation has now worsened following the shootings at a military base in Dhaka last month. “Our national security is not yet full-proof,” Ahad Ali Sarker, the Bangladesh sports minister, said. “In these circumstances, it is [...]

Delhi Likely To Be Dropped As IPL Venue

Indian Premier League 2009 The IPL has submitted to Indian government officials a re-revised schedule that incorporates several adjustments including, it is believed, a decision to drop Delhi from the list of venues. The new schedule, which follows Monday’s meeting between league and government officials, is expected to sacrifice at least one more franchise base to get security clearance for the IPL’s second season. “The Delhi police have clearly stated that they cannot provide security on any of the dates mentioned in the [earlier] schedule. That means as of now Delhi does not figure on the venue list,” an IPL [...]

Sri Lankan Cricketers Injured in Terror Attack in Pakistan

Terror struck at the heart of cricket when masked gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, received minor injuries. The attack left five security men dead and will almost certainly lead to abandonment of the ongoing Test match. While there have been terror strikes on the peripheries of cricket, this is the first time players have been directly targeted. The Sri Lankans were on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium when their bus was attacked by five [...]

Match-Winning McCullum Salutes Fellow Batsmen

In the last Twenty20 international he played, Brendon McCullum scored 61 off 47 balls. That game, against Australia in Sydney, earned New Zealand the displeasure of their captain Daniel Vettori at the way they chased 151 and lost by one run. Facing another below-par target here, McCullum was slower, hitting 56 off 49 balls. This time, the two were smiling after the match as New Zealand finally strung up a win following a three-match losing streak in Australia. McCullum seems to have taken up the senior batsman’s responsibility and has curbed his aggressive instincts to anchor an inexperienced batting line-up. [...]

Tendulkar and Irfan in for Next Two ODIs

Irfan Pathan has made a surprising return to India’s one-day squad, the selectors picking him and Sachin Tendulkar for the next two games of the seven-ODI series against England. They are the only two changes to the 15-man squad: Irfan was preferred to RP Singh while Tendulkar replaced M Vijay, who was included originally after Tendulkar asked to be rested for the first three ODIs. Pathan’s last ODI involvement was a poor performance in Sri Lanka, where he had one wicket from three matches. He went back to domestic cricket and picked up 12 wickets in two Ranji Trophy games [...]
