Australia’s Return To Form With A Huge Win Over India In The 2nd Test Match

The second test match between Australia and India ended with Australia crushing India with an innings and 68 runs. India elected to bat first and could not make much of the batting conditions offered by the pitch at the Sydney cricket ground. India were bundled up for a cheap 191, thanks to a all round bowling performance by the home side. On the other hand, Australia set up the test match in the first innings, starting with Ricky Ponting making his way back to form with a fine ton. His batting was flawless and earned every single run while his time on the crease. Clarke and Ponting shared a 288 run partnership which ended with the latter being dismissed. Clarke made merry and toyed around with the Indian pacers and spinners alike, and remained unbeaten on 329. Perhaps his finest and most memorable knock for days to come. Mike Hussey was another batsman who scored a century and remained not out on 150*.

First innings went from bad to worse for the visiting side with their batting collapse first and then the incident involving Virat Kohli which sparked controversy. Virat Kohli was caught retaliating to the crowd remarks, and did not go well the Australian media. Kohli retorted by saying, that he was abused by the crowd, and also received support from the English star batsman Kevin Petersien.

Zaheer Khan did his best in the start with the ball for India when he ran through the Australian top order dismissing the left-handers cheaply. No other bowler had any luck on the day. The second Indian innings started with the Indians staring at a huge deficit, and requiring yet another Eden garden miracle. It did not start well with Virender Sehwag falling cheaply and India on the back foot. It went for a while when Gautam Gambhir showed hints of his best and he made a well piled 83. Dravid could not do much in this test match and fell for 29. The only thing that could have made Indians smile would have been Sachin getting his 100th century. But Sachin failed in both the innings getting close especially in the second where he got out on 80. VVS Laxman did well for a 60 run knock but was just not enough to prevent Australia winning the test match with ease.

Clarke was named man of the match for his excellent performance with the bat. To be credited for the victory are also the Aussie bowlers who did excellent in dismissing the Indians cheaply. Ben Hilfenhaus and Pattinson were the stars with the ball for Australia. Australia’s thumping win shows that the Kangaroo’s leading from the axed captain Ricky Ponting, and the present skipper Clarke are all back in form, and will look to wrap up the series in the next test match.
