South Africa Aim To Wrap Up Series

South Africa have an opportunity to wrap up the five-match Cool and Cool ODI Series in the fourth match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, but to make sure that happens, they will have to improve on an area that they are traditionally world class in: fielding. Daryll Cullinan, the former South Africa batsman, labelled the current team “the worst fielding side since readmission”, and while the situation may not be quite that dire, the number of dropped catches and missed run-out chances in Tuesday’s match suggested there is still some work to be done. The bowling has also been [...]

ICC Suspend Trio Under Anti-Corruption Code

The International Cricket Council has suspended Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, the three players implicated in the Lord’s spot-fixing scandal, under the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Code. The move came on the same day Pakistan announced that the players had opted to voluntarily withdraw from the forthcoming limited overs series with England. An ICC press release said that the three players had been charged with “various offences under Article 2 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code for Players and Player Support Personnel relating to alleged irregular behavior during, and in relation to, the fourth Test between England and Pakistan [...]

Shahid Afridi To Retire From Tests

Shahid Afridi made the decision that seemed inevitable from the day he took over as Test captain, by announcing his Test retirement immediately after leading his side to a 150-run loss against Australia at Lord’s. Afridi has been a reluctant Test player over the years and this Test was his first in four years. A poor personal performance, capped by a four-ball 2 on the last day – out slogging to deep midwicket – didn’t help matters and the second Test against Australia at Headingley, starting on Wednesday, will now be his last. Afridi’s participation at Headingley, however, will depend [...]

Shahid Afridi Banned For Ball-Tampering

Pakistan stand in captain Shahid Afridi has been caught by TV camera suspect as tampering the ball by biting it with his teeth in the dramatic fifth and final ODI at the WACA Ground in Perth. Regular skipper Mohammad Yousuf had been ruled out from the last one-dayer at the minute to be replaced by Afridi – who could to be sanctioned by the ICC match referee Ranjun Madugalle for one of the more bizarre incidents to have been witnessed in international cricket. Ball-tampering normally results from fingernails and running the spikes over the ball but Afridi’s distinguished play with [...]

Bangladesh Cancel Foreign Tours

The Bangladesh government has halted all visits by foreign teams because it can’t guarantee them sufficient security, meaning that the forthcoming visit of Pakistan, which had been delayed in the wake of the Lahore attack on the Sri Lanka team, has now been postponed indefinitely. Pakistan were originally scheduled to play two Twenty20 matches and five one-day internationals from March 10-22. However, Bangladesh’s own security situation has now worsened following the shootings at a military base in Dhaka last month. “Our national security is not yet full-proof,” Ahad Ali Sarker, the Bangladesh sports minister, said. “In these circumstances, it is [...]

West Indies Call Off Abu Dhabi Tests

The proposed Test series between West Indies and Pakistan, planned originally for Abu Dhabi in November, will not be going ahead, after West Indies cited problems in their schedule. The decision leaves Pakistan with no Test cricket this year, despite repeated efforts by the board in the recent months to slot them in. “The West Indies board have informed us that they cannot go ahead with the series,” Salim Altaf, the Pakistan Cricket Board’s director-general, told Cricinfo. Had it gone ahead, the two-Test series would have taken place after the three ODIs between the two countries at the same venue [...]
